MacHINE FOLD
The process of mechanically folding printed paper.

MacHINE VARNISH
A general varnish applied to printed literature to protect or seal against smudging or finger marking.

MAKE-READY
The work associated with the set-up of printing equipment before running a job.

MARKUP
Markup refers to the sequence of characters or other symbols that you insert in certain places in a text or word processing file to indicate how the file should look when it is printed or displayed or to describe the document's logical structure. The markup indicators are often called 'tags'.

A measure of data transfer speed, typically in reference to broadband speed. It equates to 1,000,000 bits per second, 1,000 kilobits per second or 125,000 bytes per second. (1 byte is 8 bits).

Instrument for measuring thickness of paper.

MMX
Stands for Multimedia extensions. This was originally an improvement to Intel's Pentium processor which sped up processes involving graphics, sound and other data. It is still supported in Intel’s current multicore generation of processors

MODEM
Modulator/demodulator. A piece of equipment that connects computers to each other for sending communications via telephone lines. The modem converts the digital data of computers into analogue signals to send over the telephone lines, then changes it back into digital signals to be read by the computer on the other end. Modems are used for sending and receiving electronic mail, and also for surfing the net.

MODERATOR
The Moderator is a person who make sure that posts made to certain newsgroups are accurate and relevant.

A file format for digital music, usually distributed over the internet. Criticised for it’s non-hifi character, it has nontheless been instrumental in changing how we access music.
